Question

When does reduction division occur in Ulothrix?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis, or reductional division, occurs in the Ulothrix at period of zygospore development.

  1. Ulothrix has haploid plant body (gametophytic). I also produce zoo gametes (n), which unite to form a resting spores called a zygospore (2n) diploid.
  2. When the conditions are favorable, the zygospore undergoes meiosis, or reductional division, which results in the formation of zoomeiospores.
  3. At the period of zygospore production in Ulothrix, reduced division i.e. meiosis occurs.
  4. Ulothrix creates zoogametes (n) that unite to make zoosporic (2n) diploid, which is generally a resting spore, & their plant bodies are gametophytic (haploid).
  5. Reduction divisions occurs in the anthers, generating haploid pollen grains and in the ovary developing haploid eggs).
  6. Ulothrix is a genus of green algae which belongs to the Ulotrichaceae family.
  7. Ulothrix is a non-branching filamentous green algae genus which can be found in both fresh & saltwater.
  8. Its cells are generally as wide as they are long, and it thrives in the colder months of the year.
