Question

When does spermatogenesis start?

Solution

Spermatogenesis:

  1. Process of development of haploid spermatozoa from the germ cells in the seminiferous tubules of testes is known as spermatogenesis.
  2. Sperm formation begins at puberty when the Leydig cells of the testicles begin to produce androgens under the influence of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).
  3. This is controlled by Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) produced by the hypothalamus. Testosterone is critical to spermatogenesis.
  4. Spermatogenesis is a continuous process and the various stage of development of the sperm is observed in the seminiferous tubules.
  5. Spermatocytogenesis is the first stage of spermatogenesis which begins with the proliferation of male Primordial germ cells from where spermatogonia originate.
  6. Early-stage spermatogenesis occurs near the inner surface of the tubule in an epithelium-like arrangement next to the basement membrane.
  7. The diploid spermatogonia then mitotically divide and differentiate inside testes into primary spermatocytes which subsequently undergo meiotic division I to produce 2 haploid secondary spermatocytes that will later divide once more into haploid spermatids.
  8. The later stage of spermatogenesis occurs near the lumen of tubules.
  9. Spermiogenesis is the final stage of spermatogenesis that involves the transformation of spermatids into mature, motile spermatozoa.
  10. During this process, spermatids begin to form a tail and differentiate into mature sperm.

Final Answer: Spermatogenesis begins at puberty when testosterone levels rise.
