When electric current is passed through acidulated water the elements present in water that's hydrogen and oxygen gets dissociated into their respective ions that is H+ and O ions. Oxygen being an anode seeking ion , anion gets deposited at the anode, Hydrogen being a cathide seeking ion , a cation gets deposited at the cathode.

Hence chemical effect of electric current is illustrated by this statement.
