Question

When electricity is passed through a common salt solution, sodium hydroxide is produced along with the liberation of two gases ‘X’ and ‘Y’. The gas ‘X’ burns with a pop sound whereas ‘Y’ is used for disinfecting water.

  1. Identify X and Y.
  2. Give the chemical reaction for the reaction stated above.
  3. State the reaction of Y with dry slaked lime.

Solution

(i) 'X' and 'Y'

  1. ‘X’ is hydrogen gas (H2) and ‘Y’ is Chlorine gas (Cl2).
  2. Hydrogen gas burns with a pop sound and chlorine gas are used for disinfecting water.

(ii) Electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solution.

Electrolysis of aqueous Sodium chloride (NaCl) produces Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) , hydrogen gas, and chlorine gas.

2NaCl(s)+2H2O(l)ElectricCurrent2NaOH(aq)+H2(g)+Cl2(g)

(iii) Chlorine gas reaction with slaked lime

Slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) reacts with Chlorine gas (Cl2) to form Bleaching powder (CaOCl2) and water (H2O).

Ca(OH)2(aq)+Cl2(g)CaOCl2(s)+H2O(l)
