Electrolysis of water is the process of using electricity to decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen gas.

During the process of water electrolysis, oxygen present in the water gains electrons and become anion (-ve ion) which attracts toward the positive terminal of the battery i.e. anode.

And hydrogen present in the water loses electrons and becomes a cation (+ve ion) which attracts toward the negative terminal of the battery i.e. cathode.
