When freshly prepared, HNO3 is colourless. On long standing, it turns to yellow colour. Explain.

Freshly prepared HNO3 is colorless. But on strong heating, it turns to NO2 by the reaction,
4HNO34NO2+2H2O+O2
Liberated NO2 dissolves in remaining acid and gives a brownish yellow color. So it appears like brownish yellow.
[Note: Color of No2 is Brown]
