Meiosis is the type of cell division in which the contents of the nucleus are divided at the time of preparation for cell division. It divides the chromosome number among gametes. This process thus produces gametes having half the number of chromosome as that of the parent cell. Hence, representing a haploid stage. During the process of fertilization, the two haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote. Thus, restoring the diploid condition. Thus, the process of Meiosis retains the chromosome number during haploid and diploid organisms undergoing sexual reproduction.
