A flower with convex thalamaus has all floral whorl inserted inferior on the thalamus as compared to the position of ovary. Here, ovary is superior and other floral whorls are inferior; the hypogynous condition. Fusion of hypathium to gynoecium upto the base of style makes the position of other floral whorls superior to the ovary; ovary is inferior and flower is said to be epigynous. In perigynous flower, a saucer shaped or cup shaped hypanthium surrounds the ovary but does not fuse with it, the position of ovary seems inferior, though it is morphologically superior and is said be half inferior/half superior.
