Question

When is the force experienced by a current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field largest and how? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Factors affecting magnetic force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field:

  • Strength of the magnetic field
  • Current flowing through the wire
  • Length of the wire

magnetic force
F=B.I.l.sinθ , where

  • F is force acting on a current carrying conductor,B is magnetic flux density (magnetic field strength),
  • I is magnitude of current flowing through the conductor,
  • l is length of conductor,
  • θ is angle that conductor makes with the magnetic field.

The force experienced by a current-currying conductor is the maximum when the direction of current is perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field.

This is because the value of sin in this equation will be maximum when θ is 90
