The United Nations General Assembly declared September 16th to be celebrated as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
Ozone is a gas made up of three oxygen molecules present on the stratosphere of the earth's surface.
This ozone layer protects the earth from harmful radiations like ultraviolet B or UV B rays and the radiations which are less than 290nm from the sun.
These radiations affect biological life processes on earth such as effects in humans as Skin cancer, damage to the immune system, destroying the plants, and also disturbing the aquatic ecosystems.
The main cause of ozone layer depletion is the release of excess chlorine and bromine from man-made compounds mainly CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halons, CH3CCl3 (Methyl chloroform), CCl4 (Carbon tetrachloride), These are categorized as ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
So ozone layer is celebrated worldwide to spread awareness of the ozone layer and solutions associated with ozone layer depletion by organizing seminars.
