The Maratha army successfully captured Punjab, Attock and Peshawar. This led to the retreat of Ahmad Shah Abdali who was supported by Najib Khan, a Rohilla chief to invade Delhi. In order to get a firm hold over Punjab and to crush Najib Khan, the Peshwa sent Dattaji Shinde and Janakoji Shinde to the North.
