Solution

The correct option is C

H2 is evolved

Explanation for the correct option:

  1. When Zn granules reacts with Conc.H2SO4, Zinc sulphateZnSO4, Sulphur dioxideSO2 and WaterH2O is formed.
  2. Reaction: Zn(s)+2H2SO4(l)ZnSO4(aq)+2H2O(l)+SO2(g)(Zinc)(Sulphuricacid)(Zincsulphate)(Water)(Sulphurdioxide)
  3. In the above reaction Hydrogen gas H2 is not evolving.

Explanation for the incorrect option:

  1. From the above reaction we could see, Zinc Zn is getting oxidized, as its oxidation state is getting increased from 0+2 i.e., Zn0Zn+2, Zn gets oxidized to ZnSO4, so option (A) is incorrect.
  2. Again from the above reaction we could observe that Sulphur S is getting reduced as its oxidation state is getting decreased from +6to+4, i.e., S+6S+4,S(Sulphur) gets reduced to SO2( Sulphur dioxide) ,so option (B) is incorrect.
  3. In the above reaction, H2O is formed, so option (D) is incorrect.

Hence, option (C) is correct. i.e., H2 gas is not evolved, When Zn granules are added to concentrated H2SO4.
