Question

When monochromatic light travel from a rare to denser medium explain the following is frequency of reflected and refracted light same as incident light does decrease in speed imply a reduction in energy carried by light wave

Solution

(i) When light travels from a rarer to denser medium, its frequency remains unchanged. It is because, frequency is an inherent property of light.

(ii) Energy of light E = hν

Where, h = Plank's constant

ν = frequency of light

As the speed decreases wavelength also decreases so the frequency remains same.

Hence h and ν both are constant.

Energy remains unchanged.
