The iodine atoms within one molecule are pulled closer to each other by a covalent bond. Between the molecules, their exist weak van der Waal forces. When Iodine crystals are heated, the van der Waal is easily overcome and the molecule breaks into the gas phase. The iodine atoms sublime and form a purple coloured dense vapour.
