Solution

(a) the solution turns green

When SO2 is passed through acidified K2Cr2O7 solution, the solution turns green. This is because the Cr2O72- ion is reduced to the Cr3+ ion, which is green in colour.

K2Cr2O7 + 3SO2 + H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2Cr3+(aq.) + 3SO42-(aq.) + H2O
