Question

When stearic acid (C18H36O2) is added to water, its molecules collect at the surface and form a monolayer. The cross-sectional area of each stearic acid molecule is 0.21 nm2. Solution

The correct option is A 3×1023
Area of the dish of 20cm diameter (10cm=0.1m radius) has area =πr2=π×0.01m2

0.21×1018m2 is the area of =1 molecule

π×0.01m2 is the area of =π×0.010.21×1018 molecules

1.4×104g stearic acid=1.4×104284 mol

=1.4×104284No molecules

=1.4×104No284=π×0.010.21×1018

No=3.30×1023

So, Avogadro's number is 3.30×1023
Hence, the correct option is (A)
