Question

When sugar dissolves in water, the level of water does not rise appreciably. Why ?

Solution

The particles of sugar are very small. When sugar is mixed in water its particles fit in between the intermolecular spaces of water molecules and hence, the water level does not rise.

In other words, when sugar is dissolved in water the level of water does not rise because the sugar particles settle in the space between particles of water so, the volume of water does not increase.
