When sulphur is heated then a gas is formed which is when dissolved in water then a new substance is formed. The gas and new substance formed is:
SO2, H2SO3
When sulphur is heated then sulphur reacts with oxygen in air to form SO2. When this gas reacts with water then sulphurous acid (H2SO3) is formed.
S + O2 →SO2
SO2+ H2O →H2SO3
