Fruits that develop from inflorescence
Composite fruit or multiple fruits develop from an inflorescence along with the peduncle on which they are borne. They are false fruits, also known as multiple fruits. For example, pineapple, jackfruit, mulberry.
Based on the type of inflorescence they develop from, there are two types of composite fruits:-
Syconus
Sorosis
Sorosis
Sorosis fruits are derived from spike and spadix types of inflorescence.
In mulberry the female catkin inflorescence along with the perinath and rachis forms the fruits.
In pineapple the fruit develops from the spike inflorescence where the edible part of the fruit is the rachis of the inflorescence. The rhomboidal areas present outside the fruit represent the bracteate flowers.
In jackfruit the yellow perianth of the flowers of the inflorescence become fleshy and edible.
