If an iron nail is attracted towards a north pole of the magnet and sticks to it then the magnetic field lines start flowing through the iron nail. As the attraction occurs only in between two unlike poles, thus the side which gets stuck to the north pole acts as the south pole and the opposite side acts as the north pole.
