Question

When the water is heated from 0 to 10, its volume _____.

Open in App
Solution

The water is heated from 0 to 10:

  1. The volume of a substance is inversely proportional to its density, so the volume will decrease as the density increases.
  2. Generally, increasing the temperature of a substance will cause an increment in volume due to the increase in the mean molecular distance.
  3. Now when we heat water from 0oC to 4oC, the volume decreases and density increases, as ice has the highest density at 4oC (that is anomalous expansion of water).
  4. After 4oC the density of the water reduces due to the increase in the mean molecular distance and hence the volume of the water increases.
