In a liquid, the layer of molecules at its surface are acted upon by a pull which is inside and due to this pull the liquid has a tendency to contract inwards. In case we need to increase the surface area of the liquid or form a new surface, work should be done against the pull. This work done stored in the liquid surface film is its potential energy or the surface energy. Surface energy is measured by the work done to increase the surface area by unity.
