when there is a crack in a metal block and if we pass ultrasound waves through it, the waves get reflected. why?

when an untrasonic wave is passing through the crack of the metal, it gets reflected because the craks of holes inside the metal blocks which are invisible from outside reduces the strength of the structure .if their is defect then the ultrasonicwave gets reflect back.
