Question

When two bodies A and B move uniformly towards each other, the distance between them diminishes by 16 m every 10 s. If velocity of body B is reversed, the distance between them will decrease 3 m every 5 s. The magnitude of velocity of B is 10xms1, then x is

Solution

Let VA be the magnitude of velocity of A wrt ground,
VB be the magnitude of velocity of B wrt ground,
VAB be the magnitude of velocity of A wrt B.

When the bodies move toward each other.
VAB=VA+VB
1610=VA+VB
VA+VB=1.6...........(1)

When velocity of B is reversed , then
VAVB=35
VAVB=0.6..........(2)
From (1) and (2)
2VB=1
VB=1020
x=20
