Question

When two resistors of unknown resistance are joined in parallel, the equivalent resistance is 2 ohm. When the same resistors are joined in series, the equivalent resistance is 9 ohm. What are the resistance of the two resistors?

Solution

Suppose the two resistances are R1 and R2.

According to question,

1R1+1R2=12

Or R1R2R1+R2=2...................(i)

And R1+R2=9

Or R1=(9R2)......................(ii)

Putting in (i),

(9R2)R29=2

(9R2)R2=18

Or R229R2+18=0

Or (R26)(R23)=0

Or R2=6Ω or 3Ω.

For R2=6Ω=>R1=3Ω

For R2=3Ω=>R1=6Ω.
