Democracy means that the government is run through representatives elected by the general population. Since 1947, when India achieved its freedom from the British rule, it has been a democratic country. Today, ​India is the world's largest democracy.
Democracy is relevant becuase through this system, every person has a right to vote, and hence has a say in the formulation of government of his country.
