Congress asked the people of India to observe 26th January, 1930 as Independence Day. The tricolour flag was hoisted publicly across India by Congress volunteers, nationalists, and the public. This was the day when Purna Swaraj was declared publicly for the first time. Later, members of the Constituent Assembly of independent India chose 26 January, 1950 for the Constitution of India to come into effect, in order to honour the date of the public declaration of Purna Swaraj.
