Dear Student,
The Indian wildlife protection act was enacted in 1972.
One animal who has been most recently given full or partial legal protection against hunting and trade through India is tiger.
The act aimed at protecting habitats and banning hunting and trade of endangered species.
The Government enacted Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 with the objective of effectively protecting the wildlife of this country and to control poaching, smuggling and illegal trade in wildlife and its derivatives.
The Act was amended in January 2003 and punishment and penalty for offences under the Act have been made more stringent.
Consequently, central and state governments have established many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
Under the act, several other projects have also come up like project tiger, Project Rhino
The act has also included Indian elephant and black bucks giving them legal protection against hunting and trade.
Recently the act was amended to include more species of plants and animals
