Question

When we define electric potential we use the word without accelerating . What is the significance of the word?

Solution

Dear Student,

the particle is accelerating then it means the force on the charge is their . If force is applied and the displacement of the particle will take place so the work done will be their which provide the KE to the particle hence the exact calculation for the potential difference that is energy difference will be miscalculated . to get the exact potential difference move the charge by applying the force equal to the opposite force without accelerating then the work done in doing this is divided by the displacement then we get the exact PD.
