When we donate blood, the blood cells are lost along with blood. This decreased of blood cells results in decreased level of oxygen, this is sensed by peritubular cells present in kidneys, this leads to the secretion of erythropoietin by these cells. This protein then reaches the bone marrow which leads to the formation of stem cells. These stem cells are the building blocks for blood cells formation. The stem cells carries with them a message to develop more into red blood cells then into white blood cells and platelets. Hence, more red blood cells are formed and the lost blood is regained within an hour.
