Friction is a contact force. Friction always opposes the relative motion between two surfaces. When we rub our hands, friction opposes the relative motion between the two hands. Energy is needed to overcome the bonds established by friction. We know, temperature is the average kinetic energy of molecules in a body. When the bonds are broken, the molecules start to vibrate freely thereby increasing its average kinetic energy i.e. temperature.
