Question

When zinc granules are added to dilute hydrochloric acid .what is happening around zinc granules? Is there any change in temperature?

Open in App
Solution

When zinc granules are treated with dil.HCl, we get Zinc chloride and H2 gas
Zn +2 HCL- ---> ZnCl2 + H2

You get a standard metal - acid reaction occurring. The zinc is oxidised and passes into solution, whilst hydrogen ions are reduced. End products are zinc chloride and hydrogen gas (the latter can be ignited with a lighted taper or match at the mouth of the test tube)

Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq) → ZnCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

small rise in temperature is found in this reaction
