Question

When zinc metal is treated with a dilute solution of a strong acid, a gas is evolved, which is utilised in the hydrogenation of oil. Name the gas evolved. Write the chemical equation of the reaction involved and also write a test to detect the gas formed.

Solution

When zinc reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid, it results in the formation of zinc chloride and hydrogen gas is released.

The chemical equation for this reaction is:
Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Presence of hydrogen gas can be confirmed by bringing a burning candle near the mouth of the test tube from which the gas is evolved. A pop sound is produced if hydrogen gas is released.
