  1. Also called Epithelium.
  2. Epi means “ upon,” and thelia means “ grows.”
  3. Epithelium grows upon other tissues and is composed of one or more layers of cells covering the external and internal surfaces of various body organs.

Location

  1. It forms the covering or outermost layer of the animal body.
  2. Epithelium covers most organs and cavities within the body.
  3. It is found in cells lining blood vessels and transports substances that occur through a selectively permeable surface.
  4. It occurs in the lining of the esophagus and the lining of the mouth and gives protection.
  5. It forms the skin and protects the body from bacterial and viral infection by acting as a barrier.
  6. It occurs in the alveoli of the lungs, where diffusion of gases takes place between the lungs and blood.
