Stratified squamous epithelium

  1. This type of epithelium occurs in multiple layers.
  2. The stratified squamous epithelium is found in the skin. It covers the external dry surface of the skin.

Nature :

  1. The cells of the stratified squamous epithelium are arranged in many layers.
  2. Cells of different layers are different from each other.
  3. The cells in the deeper tissue possess cuboidal cells, which become polygonal and finally become flattened towards the free surface.
  4. These flattened cells on the outermost exposed surface contain a fibrous protein called keratin which makes them dead and can flake off.

Location :

  1. The stratified squamous epithelium is found in the skin.
  2. It covers the external dry surface of the skin and serves the function of protection from wear and tear.
