Solution

Decompression Sickness (DCS)

  1. Decompression sickness (DCS) occurs when dissolved gasses exit solution and form bubbles inside the body on depressurization.
  2. This state influences underwater divers who surface from a deep dive rapidly.
  3. It can also affect the pilots which fly at higher altitudes in planes having unpressurized cabins.
  4. Often, this condition is referred to as the ‘the bends’ by divers.

Causes: In all cases, decompression sickness is a result of a decrease in barometric pressure.

Symptoms:

  1. Pain in the joints, with headache and disturbances of vision occurring in 10% – 15% of cases.
  2. If left untreated, very severe DCS can be fatal.
