When a plant, suspends its normal metabolic functioning so as to reduce nutrients and water usage during unfavorable climatic conditions, then the phenomenon is said to be dormancy.
Winter Dormancy:
Like hibernation for animals, plants also undergo dormant stages for resisting the freezing environment and surviving during unfavorable climatic conditions of winter.
This is known as winter dormancy.
By the means of daylight and temperature, plants get stimulations when the winter is starting.
As day length gets shorter over time, results in the slow growth of plants.
Eventually, as winter proceeds, plants slowly go into a dormant stage.
If plants do not become dormant, water inside the plant may freeze, or due tolower temperature levels, harm can cause to theplant body which can even lead to the death of the plant.
As winter commences, it gets harder for plants to suck nutrients and water from thesoil, so they preserve and store them, being in the dormant stage for survival.
Eventually when spring arrives, and daylight starts to get longer, plants get stimulated.
And plants start to metabolic functioning slowly.
Winter dormancy is seen in the plant parts like stem, roots, bulbs, and leaves of plants residing in a colder environments.
Examples: Marble queen pothos, Chinese evergreen, Philodendron, Snake plant, etc. Shows winter Dormancy.
