Question

Where do meiosis and mitosis occur?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis:

  1. Meiosis is the division of a diploid cell to form haploid daughter cells.
  2. It takes place to make sure that each generation has the same number of chromosomes.
  3. Meiosis occurs in the cells of reproductive organs ( testes in males, and ovaries in females)
  4. It produces gametes (sperm and ova).

Mitosis:

  1. Mitosis is a cell division process that results in the formation of two daughter cells.
  2. The number of chromosomes in the daughter cells remains the same (i.e., diploid 2n); hence it is called equational division.
  3. It occurs in all cells in the body except reproductive cells.
