Question

Where do the lipids and proteins consisting the cell membrane get synthesized ?

Open in App
Solution

Plasma membrane is made up of lipids and proteins. Double layer of lipids present in the cell membrane include phospholipids, glycolipids and cholesterol. Proteins making up the cell membrane are called as extrinsic proteins and intrinsic proteins.
*Proteins are synthesised in the ribosomes and are transported or secreted into endoplasmic reticulum to which ribosomes adhere.
*Lipids are synthesised in the endoplasmic reticulum. Golgi bodies also synthesise certain biopolymers. It also consists of some processing enzymes which alter some proteins and phospholipids synthesised by endoplasmic reticulum.
