Fertilization:

  1. Syngamy is the union of gametes to give rise to a new individual organism or progeny and start its development.
  2. It is also known as generative fertilization.

Fertilization in plants:

  1. Plants fertilize themselves after pollination and germination.
  2. In the ovaries of the female flower, fertilization takes place.
  3. A pollen tube develops from the pollen grain when it touches the stigma and travels through the style and into the ovary.
  4. The pollen tube transports the sperm cells from the pollen grain into the ovary, which houses the ovules.
  5. One of the sperm cells unites with the egg inside an ovule to produce a zygote.

Fertilization in animals:

  1. Male gametes, or sperm, are discharged by the male reproductive organ, the penis.
  2. These sperm then pass via the vaginal canal and into the female body.
  3. They then proceed to the fallopian tubes, where they come into contact with the eggs.
  4. Fertilization takes happens in the fallopian tubes as a result.
