  1. It is present as genetic material in all known living organisms and many viruses.
  2. DNA carries genetic instructions for development, functioning, growth, and reproduction.

Location:

  1. The majority of the cell's DNA is present in the nucleus of the eukaryotic cell and it is called nuclear DNA.
  2. A small amount of DNA is also present in the mitochondria.
  3. In plants, DNA is also present in the chloroplast.
  4. In prokaryotic cells, DNA is present in the nucleoid region in the cytoplasm.
