The brain and the spinal cord are covered by a three-layered protective coating called the meninges. The three layers are- the outer dura mater, middle arachnoid mater, and inner pia mater.
The space between the dura mater and the arachnoid mater is called sub-dural space. The space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater is called subarachnoid space.
A watery alkaline fluid called the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fills the spaces between the meninges and acts as a shock absorber.
