The genetic material is chemically DNA or Deoxy Ribonucleic Acid. It controls various activities of the cell by synthesizing different types of protein. Each protein is synthesized by a specific segment of DNA called the gene.
This DNA is located in the nucleus in an Eukaryotic cell, where it is surrounded by nucleoplasm. The nucleoplasm is enclosed within the nuclear envelope. The envelope separates the nuclear content from the cytoplasm.
In prokaryotes the genetic material is also DNA, but is dispersed in the cytoplasm without the nuclear envelope. This form of genetic material is called Nucleoid.
