The first Indian cotton cloth mill was established in 1818 at Fort Gloaster near Kolkata, albeit this mill was a failure. The second mill which was established by KGN Daber in 1854 is called the true foundation of modern cotton industry in India.

  2. Approximately 23% of the world’s cotton is produced in India.
  3. Cotton production in India increased to 345 lakh in 2016 – 17, from 119 lakh bales in 1991 – 92. The growth registered is a whopping 190%.
  4. Out of the apparels exported from India approximately 72% of the apparels is made of cotton.
  5. India accounts for approximately 38% of the world’s cotton acreage.
  6. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana accounts for 72% of the total cotton acreage in India.
  7. Approximately 38% and 62% of India’s cotton is produced in irrigated areas and rainfed areas respectively.
  8. Largest importer of Cotton from India has been Bangladesh, from FY 2015.
  9. Indian Cotton is exported to many countries like Bangladesh,USA, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Indonesia,Thailand etc.

The major cotton producing states in India are listed below:

  1. Gujarat
  2. Maharashtra
  3. Telangana
  4. Andhra Pradesh
  5. Karnataka
  6. Madhya Pradesh
  7. Haryana
  8. Rajasthan
  9. Punjab

The states which are collectively known as the Cotton Basket of India are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
