The computer age in India began in 1955 with the installation of HEC-2M (a computer designed by A.D.Booth in England) at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) at Calcutta (now Kolkata).
India bought its first computer in 1956 for a princely sum of Rs 10 lakh. It was called HEC-2M and was installed at Calcutta's Indian Statistical Institute. It was nothing more than a number crunching machine and was huge in size.
Supercomputer PARAM 8000 (made by C-DAC) was launched on July 01, 1991 is considered India's first supercomputer. HEC-2M was the first computer bought by India for a sum of 10lakhs in 1956 culcatta's Indian statistical institution. It was called HEC-2M and was installed at Calcutta's Indian Statistical Institute.
