Question

Where will a body weigh more 1 km above the surface of the earth or 1 km below the surface of the earth?

Solution

Acceleration due to gravity at a height h is

g' = g[1 - 2h/R]
Acceleration due to gravity at depth h is

g'' = g[1 - h/R]
From above two equations it's clear that acceleration due to gravity at depth h is more than that at height h

Therefore weight of the body will be more at depth of 1 km.
