Question

Which allele is recessive?

Open in App
Solution

Allele:

  1. Alleles are the alternative forms of the same genes.
  2. Alleles are always present in pairs.
  3. Alleles even after being the same gene, express different genotypes, and phenotypes.
  4. There are two forms of alleles, the Dominant allele and the Recessive allele.

Recessive allele:

  1. Recessive alleles are the allele that cannot express themselves in presence of the dominant allele.
  2. Only when two recessive alleles are present then only it can they express themselves.
  3. This means in homozygous conditions only, they can be expressed.
  4. In presence of a dominant allele, either phenotype of the dominant allele is expressed, or a different phenotype than both alleles will appear.
  5. This means in heterozygous conditions of alleles, recessive one cannot be expressed.
  6. The allele which can be expressed only when present in homozygous conditions are recessive alleles.
