Question

Which among the following does not disproportionate in the alkaline medium?
F2,Cl2,S8,P4

Solution

Disproportionation reaction

  • Disproportionation reactions are a special type of redox reaction.
  • In a disproportionation reaction, an element in one oxidation state is simultaneously oxidized and reduced.

Disproportionate in the alkaline medium

  • In Cl2, oxidation state of Cl is 0 so it can give a disproportionation reaction because Cl shows the oxidation state from 1to+7.

Cl2(g)+2OH(aq)ClO(aq)+Cl(aq)+H2O(l)0+1-1

  • Fluorine cannot exhibit a positive oxidation state and hence does not show disproportionation tendency.
  • Fluorine can exhibit only -1 oxidation state.
  • The disproportion reaction of S8 is as follows:-

S8(s)+12OH(aq)4S2-(aq)+2S2O32-(aq)+6H2O(l)0-2+2

  • The disproportion reaction of P4 is as follows:-
  • P4(s)+3OH(aq)+3H2O(l)PH3(g)+3H2PO2-(aq)0-3+1

Hence, F2 does not disproportionate in the alkaline medium.
