Increase in volume of a body on heating is referred to as volumetric expansion or cubical expansion.
Consider a metallic body of volume(initial) = V1 . If the temperature is raised by Δ T, then experimentally increase in volume Δ V is directly proportional to its initial volume V1 and rise in temperature Δ T.

It can be mathematically expressed as,
Δ V=β×V1×Δ T

where β is the coefficient of cubical expansion.
Therefore, for increase in volume factors like initial and final volume, change in temperature is significantly important. Whereas the source of heat does not affect expansion.
