Question

Which among the following has the highest boiling point?

(i) hydrogen (ii) helium (iii) neon (iv) xenon (v) methane

Open in App
Solution

Greater the intermolecular forces between molecules greater the boiling point of substance. The order of intermolecular force is as follows.

Ionic>Hbond>Vanderwaal>dispersionforces.

The intermolecular force between the two noble gas atoms is dispersion force while in CH4 it is van der Waal forces.
H2 has very low molecular weight and they exhibit very weakly van der wall force between two H2 molecules. He,Ne, and Xe are noble gases. So, they have a lower boiling point than that of methane.

Hence, CH4 has the highest boiling point.
